American National Dies in Police Custody in Entebbe
Entebbe, Uganda – August 8, 2025
Authorities are investigating the death of an American national, identified as Eric Nkusi, who died while in custody at Entebbe Main Police Station last Friday. Nkusi, reported to be of Burundian origin, had been arrested for overstaying in Uganda after his visa expired.
According to sources, Nkusi — alleged to be a drug addict — developed severe withdrawal symptoms while in detention. He is said to have pleaded with officers on duty to provide him with heroin, claiming he would die without it. The officers reportedly dismissed his request, advising him to seek treatment upon returning to his home country.
“Nkusi demanded access to drugs, warning that he might die without them. The officers thought he was faking and did not take his requests seriously. Unfortunately, he was found dead in his cell the next day,” a source told reporters.
The incident has sparked internal tensions at Entebbe Police Station, with officers allegedly blaming each other for negligence.
The U.S. Embassy in Kampala has dispatched a team to look into the circumstances surrounding Nkusi’s death. His body has since been transferred to the City Mortuary in Mulago for a postmortem examination.
Efforts to reach Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire for comment were unsuccessful, as his known phone numbers were switched off at the time of publication.
