KAMPALA – In a startling display of political strength, the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has taken a commanding and unanimous lead in the early rounds of voting for the position of National Resistance Movement (NRM) 2nd National Vice Chairperson (Female), while her predecessor, Rebecca Kadaga, has so far failed to register a single vote.
The results, announced district by district at the ongoing NRM Delegates Conference, paint a picture of overwhelming support for the incumbent Speaker and a severe setback for the former Speaker, who is also the First Deputy Prime Minister.
The trend began with the first announced result from Bukedea District, where Among secured a resounding 91 votes against Kadaga’s zero. This pattern was repeated without exception across multiple districts:
· Kumi District: Among 131, Kadaga 0
· Serere District: Among 67, Kadaga 0
· Kaberamaido District: Among 63, Kadaga 0
· Kalaki District: Among 58, Kadaga 0
· Amuria District: Among 73, Kadaga 0
The consistent tally of zero for Kadaga, a veteran politician and former long-serving Speaker, has sent shockwaves through the conference, signaling a possible complete consolidation of delegate support behind Anita Among.
The race for the powerful party position is seen as a key indicator of the current political alignments within the ruling NRM. The early results suggest that Among has successfully galvanized the party’s grassroots structures in the eastern region, once considered a stronghold of influence for other leaders.
Voting for the position is still underway across other districts. However, the initial results have positioned Speaker Anita Among as the undisputed frontrunner, making a dramatic comeback for Rebecca Kadaga appear increasingly unlikely.
This is a developing story…
