Kampala, Uganda – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has taken a decisive step toward extending his four-decade-long rule, picking nomination forms for the 2026 general elections. The move makes him the second presidential candidate from a major political party to officially begin the process, signaling his intention to run again as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flagbearer.
Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, is widely expected to secure his party’s nomination, setting the stage for another high-stakes electoral contest. If re-elected, he would extend his presidency to over 40 years, cementing his position as one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.
The announcement comes amid growing political activity in Uganda, with opposition figures, including those from the National Unity Platform (NUP), also preparing for the race. Analysts anticipate a fiercely contested election, with key issues likely to include governance, economic reforms, and youth unemployment.
The Electoral Commission is expected to release the official campaign timeline in the coming months. President Museveni’s decision to run again ensures that Uganda’s political landscape will remain a focal point in regional and international discourse.
