KAMPALA – The Buganda Kingdom has moved swiftly to dispel public speculation and quell social media rumors alleging that the historic Kabaka’s Lake and its surrounding land have been sold to city Pastor Robert Kayanja of Miracle Centre Cathedral in Rubaga.
In a clear and firm stance, Kingdom officials have reiterated that the iconic lake and the land on which it sits remain the undisputed property of the Kabaka of Buganda, His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
This clarification comes just days after Pastor Kayanja was seen alongside Buganda Kingdom officials unveiling a new map to guide the extensive restoration and conservation of the lake. The collaborative public event appears to have been misinterpreted by some, sparking online claims that the pastor had acquired the property.
The partnership between the Kingdom and Pastor Kayanja’s church is framed as a conservation initiative aimed at restoring the lake to its former glory. The newly unveiled map is intended to chart the course for these environmental efforts, which include dredging and protecting the shoreline from encroachment.
Kabaka’s Lake, a man-made lake dug under the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II in the 1880s, is a site of profound cultural and historical significance for the Baganda people. The Kingdom’s statement reaffirms its commitment to preserving this heritage asset and assures the public that ownership remains intact despite any collaborative conservation projects.
