Burundi President Hosts Ugandan Music Star, Announces Youth-Focused Studio Project
BUJUMBURA, Burundi – In a meeting highlighting the intersection of entertainment, youth development, and regional diplomacy, Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye hosted famed Ugandan singer Jose Chameleone at the presidential palace on December 15.
The singer, whose real name is Joseph Mayanja, met the president to present plans for investing in Burundi’s creative sector, with a central pledge to establish an ultra-modern recording studio aimed at empowering local youth.
🤝 A Presidential Meeting for Youth Arts
The historic meeting took place at the Mwami Ntare Rushatsi Palace, the official Burundi State House. According to a statement from the Burundian presidency on social media, Chameleone presented his projects for Burundian youth to the president, described as the “Champion of African Youth.”
“The artist had come to present to the Champion of African Youth his projects for the Burundian youth, including the establishment of an ultramodern studio,” the presidency’s post stated. This formal recognition underscores the government’s interest in partnering with influential cultural figures to drive socio-economic initiatives.
🎤 Strategic Expansion for an East African Icon
For Jose Chameleone, a dominant figure in East Africa’s music scene for over two decades, this move represents a strategic business expansion into a neighboring market where he maintains a substantial fanbase.
· Business Exploration: Sources close to the singer indicate he is actively exploring business projects in Burundi, capitalizing on his popularity and the growing creative economy.
· Beyond Music: The proposed studio project aligns with Chameleone’s known business acumen, which includes ventures in real estate and hospitality in Uganda. It also follows a period of his involvement in Ugandan politics as a supporter of the National Unity Platform in the 2021 elections.
The initiative is seen as a direct effort to nurture local talent, provide professional training, and boost Burundi’s music industry infrastructure—a sector with significant potential for youth employment and cultural export.
🌍 Context: Art, Politics, and Regional Diplomacy
The meeting is notable on several fronts:
- Cultural Diplomacy: It exemplifies soft-power diplomacy, using shared popular culture to foster positive relations between Uganda and Burundi.
- Youth Focus: President Ndayishimiye’s administration has emphasized youth empowerment. Partnering with a major youth icon like Chameleone offers a credible pathway to engage and invest in this demographic.
- Artist as Developer: It reflects a growing trend across Africa where top artists evolve into investors and infrastructure developers within the creative industry, moving beyond performance to institution-building.
While details regarding the studio’s location, funding, and timeline are yet to be publicly released, the presidential endorsement provides significant momentum for the project. The move signals Burundi’s openness to external investment in its cultural sector and highlights the influential role artists can play in national development agendas beyond their home countries.
