Buruuli Cultural Institution Suspends Prime Minister, Deputy Over “Disrespectful” Remarks About President Museveni
In a significant shake-up, the Buruuli Cultural Institution has indefinitely suspended its Prime Minister, Samuel Kasirye, and his deputy, Ali Bisaaso, barring them from the palace following political remarks deemed disrespectful to President Yoweri Museveni.
The head of the institution, Isabaruuli Constantine Mwogezi Butamanya, confirmed the suspension, stating the two senior officials are now “jobless” and not permitted to come near the Buruuli palace.
The disciplinary action stems from comments made by Prime Minister Samuel Kasirye during recent celebrations for the Isabaruuli coronation anniversary. Kasirye publicly asserted that President Museveni played no role in the formation of the Buruuli Cultural Institution.
This claim was swiftly challenged by Government Minister Muruuli Mukasa, who countered that the institution was, in fact, established under President Museveni’s direct directive and within the framework of the Ugandan Constitution.
The controversy touches a sensitive nerve, as cultural institutions in Uganda operate within a complex political landscape. The suspension highlights the perceived risks of contradicting the official narrative regarding the government’s role in restoring and supporting traditional kingdoms.
Further intensifying the situation, sources indicate the remarks have raised concerns about the institution’s financial stability. The Buruuli kingdom is reported to receive financial assistance from the State House, and officials fear that such public dissent could lead to severe financial constraints for the kingdom.
The indefinite suspension of Kasirye and Bisaaso underscores the tightrope cultural leaders must walk, balancing traditional authority with the political realities of the day, where remarks seen as undermining the central government can carry immediate and severe consequences.
