Kampala, Uganda – Busiro East Member of Parliament (MP) Medard Lubega Sseggona has strongly condemned the ethnically divisive remarks made by former Lubaga North MP Moses Kasibante, who recently criticized non-Baganda individuals vying for parliamentary seats in the Buganda region.
Kasibante specifically targeted National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Lewis Lubongoya, a native of Bunyoro, and Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, from Busoga, questioning their legitimacy to contest in Buganda.
However, appearing on BBS Terefayina’s political talk show, Sseggona firmly rejected Kasibante’s stance, emphasizing that leadership should be evaluated on competence and capability rather than ethnic background.
“We must judge leaders by their ability to serve, not by where they come from,” Sseggona stated. “Our focus should be on whether candidates can deliver development, accountability, and proper representation—not their tribe.”
Sseggona’s remarks come amid growing debates over identity politics in Uganda’s electoral landscape. His call for merit-based leadership has drawn support from advocates of national unity, while critics of ethnic exclusion applaud his stance as a step toward inclusive politics.
Meanwhile, the NUP has yet to officially respond to Kasibante’s comments, but the controversy has sparked discussions on voter priorities and the role of ethnicity in Uganda’s democracy.
As the 2026 elections approach, Sseggona’s message reinforces the push for issue-based campaigns, urging voters to prioritize performance over tribal affiliations.
