Cabinet Approves Uganda’s First-Ever National Migration Policy
Kampala, Uganda | August 5, 2025
In a landmark development, the Cabinet on Monday, August 4, 2025, approved the National Migration Policy, marking a significant milestone in Uganda’s efforts to strengthen the management of migration across its borders and within the region.
The new policy—spearheaded by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (@mia_uga)—is the first of its kind in Uganda and adopts a pioneering, multi-sectoral approach. It brings together key Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to coordinate and streamline migration governance, ensuring that migration is managed in a safe, orderly, and beneficial manner.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the approval sets the stage for a robust nationwide dissemination campaign. The Ministry now plans to officially launch the policy and engage citizens from all corners of the country, including Ugandans in the diaspora, to ensure inclusive understanding and implementation.
“This policy will enhance how Uganda addresses both the challenges and opportunities presented by migration—ranging from labor mobility and refugee management to human trafficking and diaspora engagement,” a Ministry spokesperson noted.
The National Migration Policy is expected to serve as a guiding framework for legislation, capacity building, and institutional coordination around migration. It aligns with regional and international commitments, including the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), and the African Union Migration Policy Framework.
Stakeholders have lauded the government’s move, calling it a long-awaited step toward creating a more resilient and responsive migration system in the face of increasing global mobility trends.
