Crowdfunding Success Enables Life-Changing Hip Surgery for Nigerian Woman
LAGOS, NIGERIA – A collaborative effort on social media has resulted in a successful medical outcome for Oreoluwa, a young Nigerian woman. After battling avascular necrosis of the femur head since 2016, she underwent a total hip replacement surgery on September 14, 2025, at the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Igbobi, Lagos.
The debilitating condition had left Oreoluwa with a shortened left leg and a severe limp, challenges that reportedly intensified following the death of her mother. The cost of the life-changing procedure, approximately 1.2 million naira, was a significant barrier.
That barrier was overcome through a successful crowdfunding campaign organized on the social media platform X. The initiative was led by influencer Wizarab and coordinated by Dr. Sina, known online as The Bearded Dr.Sina.
Oreoluwa was admitted to the hospital on September 12th for pre-operative evaluations. Following the successful surgery, she was reported to be in stable condition and in recovery. She has expressed her gratitude to the online community whose donations made the operation possible.
Dr. Sina confirmed the positive outcome in a post on X, stating, “Surgery was successful and she is currently in recovery.”
This case highlights the growing use of social media as a tool for mobilizing community support and financial resources for critical healthcare needs.
