Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama has cautioned political aspirants and parties that winning internal primaries does not guarantee a spot on the ballot for the 2026 general elections.
In a statement issued by the EC, Justice Byabakama stressed that all candidates — regardless of party endorsement — will undergo fresh vetting to ensure they meet the national eligibility requirements before being nominated.
“Party endorsement alone will not guarantee nomination,” the statement read. “We will subject all candidates to fresh vetting before they can participate in the national elections.”
Justice Byabakama also warned aspirants against assuming that victory in party primaries is a political milestone, emphasising that compliance with the law is the ultimate determinant for participation in the polls.
