Ex-DRC President Joseph Kabila Hosts Opposition Meeting in Nairobi After Death Sentence
NAIROBI – Former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila was in Nairobi on October 14, 2025, to convene a two-day meeting of opposition leaders aimed at forming a unified front against the government of incumbent President Felix Tshisekedi.
The high-profile gathering comes just weeks after a military tribunal in the DRC sentenced Kabila in absentia to death on September 30. The charges against the former leader included treason, war crimes, and alleged support for the M23 rebel group, all of which he has denied.
Despite the objective of opposition unity, the meeting was notably absent of key figures such as Martin Fayulu and Moise Katumbi, highlighting the ongoing challenges in consolidating the fractured opposition.
The event also underscores Nairobi’s continued role as a neutral diplomatic hub for regional political dialogue, even as tensions persist over the conflict in eastern DRC.
