FBI Opens New Law Enforcement Attaché Office in New Zealand — First in Decades
Wellington, New Zealand — In a historic move, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has opened a new Law Enforcement Attaché office in Wellington, marking the first time in decades that the agency has launched such an office globally. The decision underscores the deepening strategic ties between the United States and New Zealand, especially within the Five Eyes intelligence alliance.
The new office will enhance collaboration between U.S. and New Zealand law enforcement agencies, facilitating intelligence sharing and joint operations aimed at combating transnational threats. With over 60 attaché offices worldwide, the FBI uses these platforms to strengthen partnerships, counter international crime, and build global security networks.
This latest expansion signals Washington’s growing focus on the Indo-Pacific region, where both nations are aligning efforts to counter the influence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), fight the international narcotics trade, and respond to rising cyber threats and ransomware attacks.
“The relationship between our two nations has never been more vital,” an FBI spokesperson said. “Together, we are protecting our citizens, defending democratic values, and tackling the security challenges of the 21st century.”
U.S. officials extended their gratitude to New Zealand for its unwavering partnership and commitment to regional and global security.
