Federal Lawmakers Urge President Tinubu to Release Separatist Leader Nnamdi Kanu

ABUJA, Nigeria – A group of 44 federal lawmakers has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to order the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a letter to the president, the legislators, who identify as the “Concerned Federal Lawmakers,” urged Tinubu to invoke his constitutional powers to free Kanu and initiate a broad-based political dialogue to address deep-seated tensions within the country.
The appeal adds to growing calls for a negotiated resolution to the prolonged detention of Kanu, which has been a central point of contention and a key driver of unrest in Nigeria’s Southeast region.
The lawmakers further requested that the president direct the Attorney-General of the Federation to terminate the ongoing prosecution of Kanu, who is facing terrorism-related charges. They argued that dropping the case and embarking on inclusive talks would be a significant step toward national reconciliation and healing.
The letter concluded with an expression of confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership and an appeal for urgent action to de-escalate tensions. The move represents a significant political push for a political, rather than purely legal, solution to an issue that has profound implications for Nigeria’s stability and unity.
