Film Director John Ssegawa Criticizes Pastor Bugembe’s Serena Performance as “Village Things”
Kampala, Uganda – Renowned Ugandan film director John Ssegawa has sparked controversy after dismissing Pastor Wilson Bugembe’s recent theatrical performance at Kampala Serena Hotel as “village things” unfit for a high-end audience.
Ssegawa, known for his sharp critiques, made the remarks during a podcast interview, where he questioned the choice of venue for Pastor Bugembe’s event. The performance featured popular figures like media personality Kasuku and comedian Teacher Mpamire in an acting skit.
“That was village theatre. If Pastor Bugembe wanted to do such performances, he should have done it in Masaka, not at Serena where high-end fans gather,” Ssegawa argued. He suggested that the event lacked sophistication and was misplaced in an upscale setting.
Pastor Bugembe, a celebrated gospel artist and preacher, has not yet responded to the criticism. However, his supporters have defended the performance, calling it an entertaining and relatable fusion of comedy, drama, and ministry.
The debate has since divided opinions, with some agreeing with Ssegawa’s stance on artistic standards, while others accuse him of elitism. Social media reactions have been mixed, with some users praising Bugembe’s ability to connect with diverse audiences, while others argue that venues like Serena should host more polished productions.
This isn’t the first time Ssegawa has publicly clashed with fellow creatives over artistic expression. His latest comments have reignited discussions about class, entertainment, and what constitutes “appropriate” performances for different audiences in Uganda’s arts scene.
More updates expected as reactions continue to pour in.
