CHICHESTER, England – The football world is in mourning after Billy Vigar, a 21-year-old forward for Chichester City FC and a former Arsenal academy player, died on September 25 from a severe brain injury sustained during a match.
The tragic incident occurred on September 20 during an Isthmian League Premier Division game against Wingate & Finchley at Somersbury Park. Vigar collided head-first with an unpadded concrete wall while playing for his team.
Despite receiving medical attention, Vigar succumbed to his injuries six days later.
Vigar, who began his career in Arsenal’s prestigious academy, was described as a talented and promising forward. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief and support from across the sport.
Premier League giants Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United were among the clubs to pay tribute, expressing their devastation and sending condolences to Vigar’s family and friends. The Football Association also released a statement of support.
The incident has reignited serious concerns about player safety at non-league grounds. Despite Football Association recommendations for protective padding on rigid structures near the pitch, such unpadded barriers remain common at many lower-league stadiums.
Vigar’s passing highlights the urgent need to address safety protocols to prevent future tragedies in the sport.
