Ghana Authorities Arrest 53 Nigerians in Major Cybercrime Bust
ACCRA – In a targeted crackdown on organized cybercrime, Ghanaian security forces have arrested 53 Nigerian nationals in a series of intelligence-led raids across the Greater Accra Region.
According to an official statement released on Tuesday, the joint operation involved multiple security agencies and was aimed at dismantling suspected cybercrime hubs operating within the country. During simultaneous raids, authorities recovered 62 laptops, 52 mobile phones, and two pump-action guns.
Of those detained, nine individuals are believed to be key organizers of the criminal network. The remaining 44 were described by officials as possible victims of human trafficking and cybercrime exploitation, having allegedly been lured to Ghana under false job pretenses.
The government emphasized that the operation was part of ongoing efforts to safeguard Ghana’s cyberspace and protect its international digital reputation. In a stern warning, officials cautioned foreign nationals against accepting dubious job offers and “quick-money” schemes, which often lead to exploitation or involvement in illicit activities.
“This operation underscores our commitment to fighting cybercrime and human trafficking syndicates that seek to use Ghana as a base,” a security spokesperson said. “We urge the public, both local and international, to exercise due diligence when presented with opportunities that appear too good to be true.”
The suspects are expected to face legal proceedings, while the rescued individuals will receive support and investigation to determine their status and possible repatriation.
Ghana has increasingly become a focus for regional cybercrime enforcement, with previous cross-border operations highlighting the scale of organized internet fraud networks in West Africa.
