Ghana Secures Exemption from US Green Card Review Policy in Diplomatic Win
ACCRA – In a significant diplomatic achievement, Ghana has been formally exempted from a recent United States policy that suspended and initiated a review of Green Card eligibility for citizens of several nations. The exemption allows Ghanaians to continue normal application procedures for US permanent residency without interruption.
The US policy, which aims to reassess and modify eligibility criteria for permanent residency applicants, impacted a number of African countries. Nations affected include Somalia, Sudan, Eritrea, Chad, Togo, Libya, Burundi, Sierra Leone, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of the Congo.
Ghana’s exclusion from this list is attributed to proactive and sustained diplomatic engagement by the Ghanaian government with US authorities. Officials highlighted the collaborative efforts to address underlying concerns that typically prompt such immigration reviews.
This exemption marks the latest in a series of diplomatic successes for Ghana in its relations with the United States. Recent victories include the restoration of five-year multiple-entry visas for Ghanaian applicants, the elimination of a 15% tariff on key exports like cocoa and other agricultural products, and facilitated travel arrangements for Ghanaian football fans attending the upcoming FIFA World Cup in the US.
“This is a testament to the strength of our bilateral relations and the effective channel of dialogue we have maintained,” a senior Ghanaian foreign ministry official stated. “It ensures that Ghanaians with legitimate aspirations to work, study, or reunite with family in the US face no undue hurdles.”
The move has been welcomed by many in Ghana, particularly the diaspora and prospective immigrants. Analysts view it as a reward for Ghana’s relative political stability and its government’s commitment to addressing documentation and compliance issues that often factor into such US policy decisions.
While citizens of the listed affected nations face a period of uncertainty during the review process, Ghana’s secured position underscores the tangible benefits of strategic diplomacy in safeguarding the interests of its citizens abroad.
