The High Court in Kampala has scheduled September 1, 2025, as the hearing date for the treason case against opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, his aide Obeid Lutale, and Capt. Denis Oola, a serving officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
According to a hearing notice issued by the Court’s Assistant Registrar, Samuel Twakire, the trial will begin at 11:00 a.m. during a Criminal Session of the High Court, where evidence will be heard against the accused persons.
The trio is charged with plotting to overthrow the government of President Yoweri Museveni, who was elected in 2021. They also face additional charges of being aware of the alleged plot and failing to notify the relevant security agencies, including the Special Forces Command (SFC), Police, and UPDF officers.
Dr. Besigye, once a close ally and personal doctor to President Museveni during the National Resistance Army (NRA) war, has long been a leading opposition figure. His relationship with Museveni soured after he challenged the President’s leadership, a fallout that has since defined Uganda’s political landscape.
The upcoming trial is expected to draw significant public attention given Besigye’s history of political battles with the ruling establishment.
