
Inmate Violence at Masindi Government Prison Leaves One Dead
Masindi, Uganda – August 4, 2025
A violent altercation between inmates at Masindi Government Prison on August 3, 2025, resulted in the death of convicted prisoner Moses Tuhame (No. MDI/829/2023), who was serving time for aggravated defilement. The attacker, identified as remand prisoner Anatoli Irumba (No. R-534/25), charged with the murder of his mother, allegedly assaulted Tuhame in the TB isolation ward at approximately 4:00 AM.
Despite being rushed to Masindi Hospital, Tuhame succumbed to his injuries hours later. Authorities have confirmed that the police are investigating the incident, and a postmortem examination will be conducted before the body is released to the deceased’s family.
The Uganda Prisons Service expressed its condolences in an official statement, saying, “We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased. May the soul of Moses Tuhame rest in eternal peace.” The statement was signed by Frank Baine Mayanja, Senior Commissioner of Prisons and Deputy Director of CCA/Service Spokesperson.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about inmate safety and prison conditions in Uganda. Investigations are underway to determine the circumstances leading to the attack and whether additional measures are needed to prevent such tragedies in the future.
