International Schools Allowed to Continue Term Two and Exams, Says Ministry of Education
KAMPALA — The Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) has authorised all international schools in Uganda to proceed with Term Two instructional activities and ongoing examinations, in line with their approved academic calendars.
The decision, communicated in a letter dated 21st January 2026, comes in response to inquiries from school proprietors and principals regarding the alignment of their schedules with the national reopening date of 10th February 2026.
In the official communication, Dr. Cleophus Mugenyi, writing for the Permanent Secretary, acknowledged that international schools operate under varied academic calendars tied to examination systems such as Cambridge International Examinations, the International Baccalaureate (IB), the French National Baccalaureate, and the American education system.
The Ministry noted that learners in these institutions had already resumed Term Two studies before the official national reopening announcement was made.
“In light of the foregoing and considering the need to ensure continuity of learning and orderly administration of academic programmes, the Ministry hereby authorises international schools to continue with Term Two instructional activities and proceed with ongoing examinations,” the letter stated.
Schools have been directed to adhere to their approved curricula, examination timetables, and all relevant regulatory and quality assurance requirements. The Ministry also reminded administrators to ensure full compliance with the Education Act and any ongoing guidelines issued by the government.
“The Ministry shall continue to monitor and supervise the implementation of academic activities to ensure adherence to national education standards,” the communication added.
The move is seen as a practical adjustment to accommodate the unique timelines of international curricula, while maintaining oversight of educational standards across all institutions.
