Kabanda to Host Museveni in Kampala for Traders’ Meeting
KAMPALA — John Kabanda, leader of the Federation of Uganda Traders Associations (FUTA), has finalized arrangements to host President Yoweri Museveni in Kampala for a meeting with city traders aimed at addressing their long-standing grievances.
According to sources, the meeting is scheduled for September 4 at Nakivubo Blue Primary School. Kabanda is expected to use the occasion to thank the President for scrapping the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System (EFRIS) tax, which Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) officials had reportedly imposed on traders without consensus.
Kabanda will also petition Museveni to lower taxes, compel URA to release containers currently impounded at customs points, and urge landlords to reduce rent in city arcades.
However, insiders suggest that Kabanda may also use the gathering to position himself as the leading voice for traders nationwide, capitalizing on ongoing wrangles within the Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) to consolidate his influence.
The meeting is expected to draw large numbers of traders from across the city.
