Wakiso, Uganda — First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the leadership of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission ahead of the upcoming Central Executive Committee (CEC) elections, declaring she has “no confidence” in the commission’s chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi.
While addressing party leaders in Wakiso District on Wednesday, Kadaga revealed her intention to formally petition President Yoweri Museveni to have Odoi excluded from overseeing the electoral process. She cited concerns over transparency and fairness in the management of internal party elections.
Kadaga, who is vying for re-election as NRM Second National Vice Chairperson (Female), also took aim at her sole challenger, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among. She argued that Among’s alleged links to international sanctions render her unfit for such a critical party role, particularly one that involves representing the NRM and Uganda at the global level.
“How can someone under sanctions represent our party or this country internationally?” Kadaga asked. “We must protect the image of the NRM and the Republic.”
The brewing tensions highlight internal divisions as the ruling party gears up for pivotal CEC elections later this month. Political observers say Kadaga’s petition, if taken seriously, could reshape the landscape of the high-stakes contest.
Neither the NRM Electoral Commission nor Speaker Among has officially responded to Kadaga’s remarks.
