KAMPALA – Political shockwaves hit Busoga politics today after Kamuli District Local Government Speaker Charles Mpalabwe dramatically abandoned long-time ally and political icon Rebecca Kadaga, declaring his support for Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among in the ongoing Central Executive Committee (CEC) campaigns.
The announcement was made during Among’s final CEC campaign event, a high-level meeting at Parliament attended by top representatives from the Uganda Local Government Association and the Uganda District Council Speakers Association (UDCSA).
Mpalabwe, who has for years been seen as a close mobilizer and beneficiary of Kadaga’s political influence in Busoga, left supporters stunned as he openly switched camps, pledging loyalty to Anita Among.
Observers say the move could further weaken Kadaga’s grip on her traditional Busoga support base, where she has long been regarded as a political powerhouse and financier.
Political analysts also note that Mpalabwe’s defection to Among’s side signals growing momentum for the Speaker of Parliament ahead of the final stages of the CEC race.
