Kenya’s Special Operations Group Foils Al-Shabaab IED Plot in Garissa
GARISSA, Kenya – In a swift counter-terrorism operation, Kenya’s elite Special Operations Group (SOG) intercepted eight Al-Shabaab militants who were attempting to set up improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the Welmerer-Yumbia area of Garissa County.
The operation was launched on Monday after the SOG received critical intelligence from the local community, who reported spotting the terrorists. The security officers swiftly responded and engaged the militants in a brief firefight.
The confrontation resulted in the successful recovery of several assembled IEDs, which authorities say were intended to target civilians, including women and children, and security personnel using the busy Welmerer-Yumbis road. No casualties were reported among the security forces during the operation.
In a statement, the SOG appreciated the cooperation of local residents and other stakeholders, highlighting the vital role of community vigilance in thwarting terror plots. The incident underscores the continued threat posed by the Somalia-based Al-Shabaab group and the ongoing efforts of Kenyan security forces to combat cross-border terrorism.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
