Liberia Agrees to Humanitarian Transfer of Salvadoran National Following U.S. Request
MONROVIA – The Liberian government has announced it will accept Salvadoran national Kilmar Abrego Garcia on a strictly temporary and humanitarian basis, acceding to a formal request from the United States.
The decision was confirmed in an official statement from Liberia’s Ministry of Information, which noted that the move followed extensive consultations with both national and international stakeholders.
Garcia’s deportation case has been a subject of international scrutiny. Previously, countries including Ghana, Uganda, and Eswatini refused to accept him following allegations of involvement with gangs and migrant smuggling—accusations he has consistently denied.
The path to Liberia became viable after U.S. attorneys noted in a recent court filing that Garcia had not outright rejected Liberia as a potential destination, unlike other nations, making it a feasible option for his deportation.
The Liberian government has emphasized that the acceptance is a temporary humanitarian gesture and is not a permanent resettlement.
