Mama Ngina Kenyatta Visits Odinga Family to Offer Condolences After Raila Odinga’s Death

BONDO, Kenya – In a significant gesture of unity and respect, former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta, 92, led a delegation of the Kenyatta family to the home of the Odingas on Wednesday, October 30, 2025, to offer condolences following the death of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga.
The visit to Opoda Farm in Bondo was to console Raila Odinga’s widow, Ida Odinga, and the wider family. The prominent political figure passed away from cardiac arrest on October 15, 2025, in India.

This solemn meeting underscores the complex and enduring historical alliances between Kenya’s two most prominent political dynasties, despite their long history of rivalry. The visit is seen by many as a continuation of the reconciliation famously symbolized by the 2018 “handshake” between Mama Ngina’s son, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and Raila Odinga, which ended a period of post-election turmoil.
The gesture of solidarity comes amid ongoing public discussion regarding the management of the late leader’s legacy. The Raila Odinga Amolo Foundation has taken over his social media accounts, a move that has drawn mixed reactions. While some supporters have praised the effort to preserve his digital presence and continue his work, critics have called for the accounts to be respectfully archived.
The official social media account for the Raila Odinga Amolo Foundation acknowledged the visit, posting: “Thank you Former First Lady, H.E. Mama Ngina Kenyatta and your family for joining the nation in mourning and coming home to commiserate with H.E. Mama Ida Odinga and the family.
