KAMPALA – The Grade One Magistrates Court at Mwanga II has remanded a woman to Luzira Prison after she failed to produce her son, whom she had stood surety for in a high-profile trespass case involving the Rubaga Miracle Centre Cathedral.
The accused, Namugga Prossy, had signed a non-cash bond of Shs20 million to secure the release of her son, Tumwine Moses, who was facing charges of criminal trespass.
The case dates back to 2023 when Tumwine Moses was arrested for allegedly trespassing on the premises of the Rubaga Miracle Centre Cathedral. Prosecutors asserted that his actions were intended to annoy the church’s renowned lead pastor, Robert Kayanja.
Upon being granted bail, Tumwine presented his mother, Namugga Prossy, as his surety. By signing the bond, she undertook the legal obligation to ensure her son would report back to court as required for all his hearing dates.
However, Tumwine has since absconded and is now missing. His repeated failure to appear in court for his trial prompted the presiding magistrate to issue a warrant for his immediate arrest.
Consequently, the court turned to the surety for accountability. Namugga was unable to fulfill her duty of presenting the accused to the court, leading to her arrest on the court’s request.
Yesterday, the magistrate heard the facts of her failure to comply with the bail terms and subsequently ordered her remand to Luzira Prison until she can either fulfill her obligation or the court makes a further determination on the matter.
The case has been adjourned indefinitely, pending the re-arrest of the primary suspect, Tumwine Moses. The incident highlights the serious legal responsibilities undertaken by individuals who stand as sureties in court proceedings.
