ARUA, UGANDA – President Yoweri Museveni has reiterated his administration’s focus on commercial agriculture as the primary weapon against poverty, during a meeting with local leaders from the West Nile districts of Moyo and Obongi.
The meeting, held at the Arua State Lodge on October 18, 2025, centered on transitioning households from subsistence farming to market-oriented production. President Museveni specifically advocated for the cultivation of perennial crops such as coffee, cocoa, and avocados, alongside the development of dairy farming.
In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the President stated, “I commend their commitment to fighting poverty through enterprise and focus on perennial crops… We’ll support them with seedlings under zonal production and the PDM.”
The “PDM” refers to the government’s Parish Development Model, a flagship program designed to channel resources to the grassroots level to boost household incomes. The announcement signals an immediate push to distribute seedlings to farmers in the region to kickstart this agricultural shift.
Beyond poverty alleviation, the discussions also addressed the persistent issue of cross-border cattle rustling from neighboring South Sudan. President Museveni confirmed that the government would follow up on commitments for compensation and enhanced security measures through the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and the Attorney General.
This engagement is part of the President’s ongoing tour of the West Nile region, aimed at consolidating government programs and addressing local challenges.
