NEC’s Strategic Support to National Security Honored as CDF Recognizes Lt Gen Mugira
KAMPALA – August 20, 2025 – In a significant event today, the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the commercial arm of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), was formally recognized for its pivotal contributions to the country’s defence capabilities.
The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, presented a token of appreciation to Lieutenant General James Mugira, the Managing Director of NEC
The event underscored the crucial role NEC plays in fostering self-sufficiency and enhancing the operational readiness of the UPDF. Through its diverse subsidiaries, NEC is involved in key sectors including armament manufacturing, infrastructure development, medical services, and agricultural production, all aimed at supporting the armed forces and reducing reliance on foreign imports.
While the specific details of the recent contribution were not fully disclosed, the recognition is seen as an affirmation of NEC’s success in driving innovation and industrial growth within Uganda’s defence sector. Projects such as the Luweero Industries, which manufactures small arms and ammunition, and the NEC Construction and Engineering Works, are prime examples of the corporation’s strategic importance.
Upon receiving the honor, Lt Gen Mugira expressed his gratitude to the UPDF leadership for its unwavering support. “This token is not for me personally, but for the entire NEC family—the engineers, technicians, and staff whose dedication and hard work turn our national vision into tangible assets for our forces,” he stated. “We remain committed to our mandate of supporting the UPDF through industrial and technological advancement.”
Gen Kainerugaba praised Lt Gen Mugira’s leadership and the corporation’s tangible output. “The National Enterprise Corporation is a cornerstone of our strategic autonomy. The work they are doing is vital for the present and future security of Uganda. This recognition is a well-deserved acknowledgment of excellence and a call to even greater heights,” the CDF remarked.
