The National Unity Platform (NUP) has unveiled Florence Asio as its new candidate for the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament seat. This announcement comes after the party’s initial candidate, Mercy Marion Alupo, was disqualified by the Electoral Commission and the High Court for lacking voter registration in the district.

The opposition leader, Bobi Wine, introduced Asio at a rally and launched a strong accusation against the incumbent Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among. He alleged that Speaker Among used the Electoral Commission and the courts to systematically remove her potential opponents from the electoral race.
In a post on X, Bobi Wine stated, “Anita Among using the Electoral Commission and the Courts recently had the @NUPUg candidate, the FDC candidate and an independent candidate removed from the Voters’ Register in order to block them from running against her in Bukedea.” He further claimed that the removed candidates were not given a fair hearing, stating, “None of those candidates were ever invited for any tribunal hearing until they were informed that the Parish Tribunal had decided to remove them from the register!”
With a court case on the matter still ongoing, NUP has moved forward by nominating comrade Florence Asio, a party activist. Bobi Wine expressed hope that the new candidate would not face similar obstruction, framing the upcoming contest as a choice for the people of Bukedea “between an internationally sanctioned thief of public funds and a young vibrant leader who will speak for them.”
Florence Asio has pledged to vigorously challenge Speaker Among amidst these claims of political interference. The electoral nominations for the position are scheduled for Wednesday.
