KAMPALA – Kaija Doreen, a senior official at the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) School of Leadership, has been remanded to Luzira Upper Prison on charges stemming from what authorities describe as unauthorized activities.
Doreen faces multiple charges, including operating a school without permission from the government, participating in an unauthorized military parade, conspiracy to commit a felony, and related offenses. The state alleges that these actions caused panic within State House and security organs, reportedly “giving sleepless nights” to President Yoweri Museveni.
From the courtroom, Doreen struck a defiant tone. She declared that she would not beg for her freedom from the President, stating, “I cannot kneel before Gen Museveni and ask for my freedom because it is my right to be free.”
She further issued a rallying cry, asserting that Ugandans are prepared to fight for their liberty. “Ugandans are at will to fight up to the last man if it is what it takes to gain the freedom they want,” Doreen stated.
The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting the ongoing tensions between the opposition party and the ruling NRM government. The charge of “unlawful drilling” or participating in a military-style parade is often treated with extreme severity by the state, which views it as a direct challenge to its authority.
Doreen has been remanded until her next court hearing. The case is expected to be closely watched as a bellwether for political dissent and freedom of assembly in the country.
