KAMPALA – Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the Deputy Spokesperson for the National Unity Platform (NUP) and an aspirant for the Nakawa East parliamentary seat, was produced before a Kawempe court on Thursday, hours after he was reportedly violently abducted by security operatives.

Mufumbiro’s disappearance occurred earlier in the day as he was arriving at a court to attend a session for the bodyguards of NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine. The bodyguards were appearing to seek bail.
Upon his reappearance, Mufumbiro made serious allegations about his detention. He explicitly named Michael Kabaziguruka, the Electoral Commission chairperson of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), as the individual he believes orchestrated his violent arrest earlier this week.
The aspirant further claimed that during his time in detention, he was subjected to intimidation and was instructed to cease his political support for NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi.
Additionally, Mufumbiro stated that his captors accused him of participating in an illegal military-like parade. This alleged event is said to have taken place at the NUP headquarters in Makerere Kavule and was reportedly inspected by Kyagulanyi himself.
The circumstances surrounding Mufumbiro’s abduction and the serious allegations he has raised are likely to intensify ongoing debates about the treatment of opposition figures in the country. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
