NUP’s Florence Asio Withdraws from MP Race, Reveals She Is Speaker Anita Among’s Daughter
In a dramatic political twist, Florence Asio, the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer for the Bukedea Woman MP seat, has publicly revealed that she is the daughter of the very person she intended to challenge: Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.
The revelation came after a week of confusion and serious allegations. Asio disappeared hours before her nomination on October 23, which led her party, NUP, to accuse “state actors” of kidnapping her to ensure Speaker Among would run unopposed. As a result, Among was subsequently declared the unopposed candidate for the Bukedea Woman MP seat in the 2026 elections.
However, in a recent video statement, Asio resurfaced to refute her party’s claims and clarify the situation. She stated that she was not kidnapped and apologized for the confusion her disappearance caused.
“I was not kidnapped as alleged by my party leadership,” Asio said. “I pulled out of the Bukedea Woman MP race due to family pressure, being it that I am a daughter to the Rt Hon. Speaker Anita Among.”
She explained that her decision to run for office under the opposition NUP came as a surprise to her family, who only learned of her political affiliation on the day she was unveiled as a candidate. This familial pressure ultimately led to her withdrawal from the race.
The development has sparked reactions, with commentators like Chris Obore, the Director of Communications at Parliament, weighing in on social media. Obore stated, “Next time don’t blame Speaker Anita Among without facts. Hatred and blackmail is bad politics,” suggesting the incident demonstrates the dangers of political assumptions.
This story, which first emerged from posts on social media platform X, brings a startling personal dimension to the political landscape in Bukedea and highlights the complex interplay between family and politics in Uganda.
