KAMPALA – In her first public remarks since a controversial party decision, National Unity Platform (NUP) general Saudah Madada has defiantly declared herself “a candle that does not fear any darkness,” following her denial of the party flag for the Woman Lord Councillor of Kampala Central seat.
Madada’s comments come amid a wave of criticism from within party ranks, where some have labeled her a “misfit” after she lost the official nomination. She addressed these attacks directly, firmly stating her unwavering commitment to the party’s cause.
“I am still a daughter of the liberation struggle, and I remain loyal to the party president,” Madada asserted, signaling her intent to stay within the NUP fold despite the internal rift.
The situation reached a boiling point when trusted sources revealed that Madada collapsed upon receiving the news that she was deemed ineligible to carry the party’s flag. The ticket was instead awarded to Eva Kyazike.
The decision has sparked allegations of nepotism within the opposition party. Sources close to the matter indicate that Eva Kyazike is a relative of NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, specifically through his late mother. Furthermore, it is reported that Kyazike has been a long-time associate of party chairman Joel Ssenyonyi (referred to as Chairman Nyanzi in some circles), having campaigned with him during the 2021 elections.
Citing these reasons and claiming an unfair process, Saudah Madada has chosen to challenge her party’s official candidate by registering to contest in the upcoming election as an independent candidate. This move sets the stage for a tense intra-party battle for the Kampala Central seat.
The NUP has yet to issue an official statement regarding the allegations of favoritism or Madada’s decision to run independently.
