Over 200 Aspirants Pick Presidential Nomination Forms, EC Announces
KAMPALA – The race for the presidency is heating up as the Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a significant number of aspirants have taken the first formal step towards contesting the highest office.
According to Paul Bukenya, the Deputy Spokesperson of the Electoral Commission, a total of 211 presidential aspirants have so far collected nomination forms. This high figure indicates a fiercely competitive election season ahead.
However, acquiring the forms is merely the initial hurdle. Each of these aspirants now faces a stringent set of requirements to be officially accepted as a candidate.
As outlined by the EC, every individual must now embark on a nationwide campaign to gather support at the grassroots level. Specifically, they are required to collect a minimum of 100 signatures from registered voters in each of at least 98 districts across the country.
In addition to this significant logistical task, all aspirants must pay a non-refundable nomination fee of Shs20 million to the Electoral Commission.
The commission has set September 22 and 23 as the official dates for the nomination of presidential candidates. Only those who successfully fulfill all the requirements—submitting the necessary signatures and paying the fee—by this deadline will be duly nominated to run for president.
The EC has urged all aspirants to carefully adhere to the guidelines and timelines to ensure a smooth nomination process.
