Over 30 Tons of Wheat Seed for Karamoja Arrives in Uganda, Boosting Agriculture Stability

ENTEBBE – In a significant step towards enhancing agricultural productivity in the Karamoja region, the Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) program has announced the successful arrival of over 30 tons of wheat seed.

The consignment, which arrived yesterday at Entebbe International Airport aboard a Uganda Airlines flight from Nigeria, was received by a team from OWC led by officials Robert Anyang and Philip Idro.
According to a statement from OWC, the seeds have been transported to the Equator Seeds warehouse in Namanve for safekeeping. The next critical phase involves inspection by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) to ensure the seeds are disease-free and meet all required phytosanitary standards.
Once officially cleared, the seeds will be released for a crucial multiplication process. This will be carried out at farms managed by the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) and other irrigated sites across the country. Utilizing irrigated farms is a key strategy to guarantee production stability, shielding the vital seed supply from the unpredictability of weather patterns.
This initiative, championed by OWC, is part of a broader government effort to transform agriculture in the Karamoja sub-region. By securing a reliable and high-quality seed source, the program aims to boost wheat production, enhance food security, and stimulate economic activity for local farmers.
The arrival of the seeds marks a pivotal move in securing the agricultural future of the region, ensuring that farmers have access to resilient planting materials for seasons to come.
