York, UK | August 4, 2025 — Ugandan rugby star Peace Lekuru has made history by becoming the first Ugandan national to sign for a Women’s Super League club, joining England’s top-flight side, York Valkyrie.
The 25-year-old made the journey from Uganda to North Yorkshire earlier this month, marking a significant milestone not only in her personal career but also in Uganda’s sporting history.
Lekuru, who has been a standout performer on the Ugandan national women’s rugby team, the Lady Cranes, is celebrated for her fierce tackling, quick feet, and leadership on the field. Her signing with York Valkyrie signals growing international recognition of Ugandan talent in the world of rugby league.
“I’m honored and excited to be here,” Lekuru said upon her arrival. “This is a dream come true, not just for me, but for every young girl in Uganda who dares to dream big in sport.”
York Valkyrie, a powerhouse in the Betfred Women’s Super League, expressed confidence in Lekuru’s abilities. “Peace brings a unique flair and strength to the squad,” said the club’s head coach. “She has shown immense skill and maturity at the international level, and we’re thrilled to have her.”
Lekuru’s move to the UK comes at a time when women’s rugby is rapidly growing in both popularity and competitiveness. Her historic signing is expected to inspire a new generation of female athletes in Uganda and across East Africa.
Back home, the Uganda Rugby Union praised the development. “This is a proud moment for Ugandan rugby,” a statement read. “Peace Lekuru has always been a trailblazer, and we believe this is just the beginning for many more of our players to shine on the global stage.”
As she settles into her new team and environment, Lekuru carries the hopes of a nation—and the determination to prove that Ugandan athletes belong at the very top of world sport.
