BUYENDE, Uganda – Tensions marked the second day of Uganda’s 2026 presidential campaigns as opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine, faced significant obstructions from police while campaigning in the eastern region.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) convoy, led by Bobi Wine, was diverted by police roadblocks away from main roads onto rural paths as it attempted to reach a scheduled rally at Bukungu Landing Site in Buyende District. The police ultimately blocked access to the venue entirely.
The measures sparked frustration among gathered supporters, who accused authorities of deliberately sabotaging their campaign efforts. Police, however, defended their actions, stating they were necessary for crowd control and the protection of local businesses.
Undeterred, the opposition leader addressed impromptu crowds from the roadside before rerouting his campaign to hold a rally in the neighboring Kamuli District. The incident highlights the ongoing political friction in the Busoga region as the election season gets underway.
