Masaka – Kampala property dealer, Mr. Mukisa, the CEO of Mukisa Property Consultants, caused a stir over the weekend after openly going against long-held Buganda cultural norms during his introduction ceremony in Masaka.

In a viral video from the event, Mukisa was seen receiving a heartfelt hug from his mother-in-law (Nyazala) after he gifted her a brand-new car. Overwhelmed with joy, the mother-in-law embraced him in gratitude, an act that sparked mixed reactions both online and within cultural circles.
According to Buganda traditions, it is a taboo—dating back over 1,000 years—for a man to be touched or approached closely by his mother-in-law. Cultural norms strictly prohibit any form of physical contact between the two, regardless of the circumstances.
While some praised Mukisa for demonstrating love, responsibility, and appreciation for his new family, cultural custodians and traditionalists criticized the gesture as a violation of Buganda customs.
The incident has since ignited debate about whether cultural traditions should remain rigid or adapt to modern expressions of gratitude and affection.
