Russia’s SJ-100 Jet Completes Successful Maiden Flight, Marking Aviation Milestone
In a significant step toward aviation self-sufficiency, Russia has successfully conducted the maiden flight of its fully domestic SJ-100 regional jet. The flight took place in Komsomolsk-on-Amur and was announced by state-owned corporation Rostec.
The development of the SJ-100, built by the Yakovlev company and powered by Russian PD-8 engines, is a direct response to Western sanctions. A key achievement of the program is the replacement of over 60 foreign components with domestically produced parts. The aircraft is designed to seat up to 100 passengers.
This milestone, which was delayed from an initial 2023 target, positions the aircraft as a future competitor to models like those from Boeing. With the maiden flight complete, serial production is already underway for an additional 24 units as the aircraft continues its certification process.
