Suspect Charged in Murder of Conservative Activist Charlie Kirk; Case Sparks National Debate
UTAH – Tyler Robinson, 22, has been formally charged with aggravated murder in the assassination of conservative commentator and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. The shooting occurred on September 10, 2025, at an event hosted by Utah Valley University.
According to prosecutors, evidence against Robinson is substantial. It includes text messages in which he allegedly confessed to the killing, citing his opposition to what he termed Kirk’s “hatred.” Authorities also recovered a premeditated note and shell casings at the crime scene that were engraved with anti-fascist phrases, pointing to a potentially ideologically motivated attack. The state has announced it will seek the death penalty.
The tragic event has ignited a fierce national discussion on political polarization and violence. The case became a flashpoint on social media after late-night host Jimmy Kimmel reportedly incorrectly identified the alleged assassin’s motives on his show. This prompted a response from former West Virginia state legislator Derrick Evans, who publicly called out Kimmel and demanded an apology for what he characterized as a lie to the audience.
Amid the outpouring of reactions, Kirk’s widow has vowed to continue his work and legacy at the helm of Turning Point USA.
