NAIROBI – A family is in mourning and a hospital is facing intense scrutiny after a woman died due to complications during a cesarean section procedure. Joseph Owen Wanyonyi, a Nairobi-based small business owner, has publicly accused St. Teresa Kikuyu Hospital and its CEO, Dr. Moses Mwaura, of gross medical negligence leading to the death of his wife, Philis Wanyonyi.
The tragic incident occurred on September 12, 2025. According to Wanyonyi’s emotional accounts shared on social media platform X, his wife underwent a cesarean section at the facility. Despite the family being assured that blood supplies were available, Philis suffered from excessive bleeding during the procedure and the necessary blood was not administered in time to save her life.
In a desperate attempt to save her, Philis was transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital. Wanyonyi claims that staff at the national hospital were critical of the care his wife received at St. Teresa, further fueling his allegations of negligence.
The story has sparked widespread outrage online, with the hashtag #JusticeForPhilis trending as users express their support for the grieving husband and demand a thorough investigation into the hospital’s practices.
This is not the first time St. Teresa Hospital has faced such allegations. In 2019, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) temporarily revoked the facility’s license following another fatal cesarean section complication, highlighting persistent concerns about maternal healthcare standards in some Kenyan institutions.
As the online campaign grows, the public awaits an official response from St. Teresa Hospital and the relevant medical authorities.
