KAMPALA – The community is in mourning following the sudden and tragic death of a Ugandan woman, identified only as Sonia, just five days after returning home from a four-year stint working abroad as a housemaid, commonly known as a kadama.

Unconfirmed but widespread reports allege that Sonia was poisoned by the very person she trusted to safeguard her earnings. It is claimed she had been sending portions of her salary to this individual for the entire duration of her stay abroad, with the understanding that the savings would be waiting for her upon her return to Uganda.
According to sources close to the investigation, the trusted individual picked Sonia up from Entebbe International Airport, full of hope after years of hard work. In a fateful stop that now appears sinister, they reportedly visited a restaurant in Entebbe. It is alleged this meal was part of a plan to end her life.
Shortly after, Sonia began to suffer from severe stomach pain. Her condition rapidly deteriorated, and she passed away amidst immense pain, a mere five days after setting foot back on Ugandan soil.
Authorities have been alerted to the circumstances surrounding her death. While official causes are pending a full post-mortem examination and police investigation, the allegations of foul play have sparked outrage and sadness.
This incident has cast a dark shadow and raised serious concerns within communities of Ugandans working abroad, highlighting the vulnerabilities they can face and the critical importance of having secure and trustworthy channels for managing their hard-earned finances.
