Trump Calls for Imprisonment or Deportation of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar
President Donald Trump has escalated his attacks on Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, claiming she should be jailed or sent to Somalia over unsubstantiated allegations of large-scale fraud.
In a series of posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump accused the Minnesota congresswoman of being involved in what he described as billions of dollars in fraud within her state. He further alleged that Omar “hates the USA” and should be deported, adding a taunting suggestion that she “could help to make Somalia great again.”
The attacks recycle longstanding and unproven conspiracy theories targeting Omar, who is a frequent subject of right-wing criticism. Trump provided no evidence for the claims of financial fraud.
Representative Ilhan Omar, born in Somalia, came to the United States as a refugee as a child. She became a U.S. citizen in 2000 and was elected to Congress in 2018, making history as one of the first two Muslim women to serve in the House of Representatives. Now in her third term, she is a prominent progressive voice on foreign policy and social issues.
As of now, Representative Omar has not publicly responded to Trump’s latest remarks. The statements come amid a heated election cycle where immigration and national identity are central themes.
Political analysts note that Trump’s rhetoric mirrors previous inflammatory attacks on political opponents and aligns with his campaign strategy of energizing his base with divisive language. Legal experts have widely dismissed the suggestion of deporting a sitting member of Congress who is a naturalized U.S. citizen as having no basis in law.
The episode is expected to further inflame partisan tensions, with advocates for Omar likely to condemn the comments as a dangerous escalation of xenophobic and personal attacks against a sitting legislator.
