Trump, Putin Meet in Anchorage for Historic Peace Summit on Ukraine
ANCHORAGE, ALASKA — United States President Donald J. Trump on Friday welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin to Anchorage for a highly anticipated summit focused on ending the war in Ukraine.
Air Force One touched down earlier in the day, with Trump personally greeting Putin on the tarmac. The red-carpet reception featured a backdrop of F-22 fighter jets, symbolizing American military strength, as the two leaders exchanged handshakes before riding together in “The Beast,” the U.S. presidential limousine.
The choice of Anchorage carried symbolic weight. Once a Russian colony before its purchase by the United States in 1867, Alaska served as neutral ground for the two presidents’ first face-to-face talks since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict.
“This is a historic moment,” President Trump said ahead of the meeting. “We are here to explore peace, and I hope President Zelensky also wants peace for Ukraine.”
Negotiations are reported to have begun immediately, with both sides expected to discuss a potential framework for ceasefire and long-term stability in Eastern Europe.
The summit, widely described as a turning point in U.S.–Russia relations, has drawn global attention as Trump seeks to leverage his second term to broker an end to one of the most devastating conflicts of the decade.
While details of the closed-door talks remain scarce, both leaders expressed optimism about the possibility of charting a path toward peace.
