Trump’s Gyeongju Arrival Sets Stage for High-Stakes Trade and Diplomacy at APEC Summit

GYEONGJU – The arrival of former President Donald Trump in Gyeongju for the APEC Summit has sharply focused attention on Seoul’s urgent efforts to recalibrate its key alliances in the face of a renewed U.S. administration.
Analysts suggest Trump is attending not merely as a guest of honor, but as a cornerstone participant in brokering a landmark bilateral deal. The proposed agreement would see a significant reduction in U.S. auto tariffs in exchange for billions of dollars in South Korean investment into American manufacturing.
Beyond the immediate U.S.-South Korea negotiations, Trump’s presence is also seen as the fulcrum for a fraught but consequential dialogue between the United States and China, scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the summit.
The high-stakes atmosphere was underscored on the eve of formal negotiations by a dinner hosted by President Lee Jae-Myung. The event, which included Prime Minister Wong and five other world leaders, was widely interpreted as a display of alliance solidarity and a soft-diplomacy effort to foster a collaborative environment.
Adding a layer of symbolic weight to the military and economic discussions, Trump was presented with a personalized bomber jacket, modelled on the flight gear worn by Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) pilots who train in the United States. The gift served to reinforce the deep threads of military camaraderie and shared strategic purpose between the nations, even as complex economic and geopolitical interests take center stage at the summit.
