U.S. Embassy Issues Security Alert for Kampala During Presidential Nominations
KAMPALA, Uganda – September 22, 2025 – The U.S. Embassy in Kampala has issued a security alert for American citizens in Uganda, advising heightened caution due to expected significant disruptions and an increased security presence on September 23 and 24, 2025.
The alert coincides with the Ugandan Electoral Commission’s scheduled two-day nomination process for presidential candidates. The events are expected to draw large crowds and necessitate major security operations throughout the capital city.
The Embassy warns of rolling road closures, security checkpoints, barriers, and a visible increase in police and security forces deployed to manage the gatherings. Specific locations mentioned as potential hotspots include:
· Independence Park in Kololo
· Katwe Grounds
· The Lweza-Lubowa area along the Old Entebbe road, leading to Entebbe Airport
· Kaala PlayGround in Nateete
· Various other sites across Kampala and parts of Wakiso District
In light of these events, the U.S. Mission is urging American citizens to take several precautionary actions:
· Monitor Local Media: Stay informed about traffic disruptions and security developments.
· Avoid Crowds and Demonstrations: Steer clear of large political gatherings and any protests that may occur.
· Keep a Low Profile: Be discreet and avoid drawing unnecessary attention.
· Stay in Contact: Notify friends and family of your whereabouts and safety.
· Be Vigilant: Maintain awareness of your surroundings at all times.
· Review Personal Security Plans: Ensure you know what to do in case of an emergency.
· Carry Identification: Have a U.S. passport with a current Ugandan visa readily available.
Uganda is currently under a Travel Advisory Level 3: Reconsider Travel, issued by the U.S. Department of State.
