Uganda Airlines CEO Position Set for Re-advertisement Amid Losses and Scrutiny
The board of Uganda’s national carrier, Uganda Airlines, has resolved to re-advertise the position of Chief Executive Officer, casting uncertainty over the tenure of current CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki. The decision follows a board meeting last week chaired by Priscilla Mirembe Sseruka, where concerns were raised about the airline’s performance and long-term viability.
According to sources cited by Bbeg Media, the move has received approval from President Yoweri Museveni. Alongside the CEO role, several other senior director positions may also be advertised anew.
The airline, relaunched in 2019 with significant public expectation, has struggled financially. Parliamentary records indicate a net loss of approximately Shs324.9 billion for the 2022/2023 financial year. Although losses narrowed to about Shs237.8 billion in 2023/2024, they remain substantial. The airline’s management has previously argued that early losses are expected for a new national carrier, but persistent deficits have increased pressure as the entity continues to rely on government support.
Passenger experience has also been a point of contention, with complaints about poor service, frequent flight cancellations, and persistent delays.
CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki’s leadership has been marked by controversy. Appointed in 2022, she previously served as the airline’s commercial director, a role she lost in 2019 under a different board. Her appointment to the top job drew criticism from lawmakers who questioned the recruitment process and her suitability. Parliamentary inquiries have since examined the appointment, with allegations that the process was altered and concluded abruptly.
Broader governance concerns have also plagued the airline, with management facing scrutiny over procurement, route selection, and alleged conflicts of interest.
The move to re-advertise the CEO position signals a potential reset for the national carrier as it grapples with operational, financial, and governance challenges.
