KAMPALA, UGANDA | Uganda Airlines is once again in the spotlight following the controversial ouster of its Head of Flight Operations, Capt. David Kaweesa, a veteran pilot with decades of international aviation experience.
According to reports, the position is now vacant after Kaweesa, a native of Bunyangabu in the Tooro region, was relieved of his duties. He had trained as a pilot in Canada and worked with several reputable airlines, including East African Airways and Saudi Air, where he served for over 20 years.
Sources familiar with the developments described Kaweesa as “complicated and hard to work with,” citing his rigid insistence on high operational and regulatory standards. Colleagues reportedly accused him of running the national carrier “as if it were a Canadian airline,” often clashing with staff unwilling to meet his uncompromising demands.
Despite the controversies, aviation observers have described his removal as a major setback for Uganda Airlines, arguing that his expertise and commitment to compliance were critical for the growth and credibility of the national carrier.
It is reported that Kaweesa has since accepted his removal and returned to Canada, which he considers his second home.
His exit leaves Uganda Airlines searching for a new Head of Flight Operations at a time when the young national carrier is still grappling with challenges of efficiency, professionalism, and global competitiveness.
