Uganda CAA Hosts Basketball Tournament to Celebrate Global Aviation Week
ENTEBBE – The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) successfully hosted the second edition of the Aviation Week Basketball Tournament over the weekend, bringing together aviation stakeholders and the local community in a celebration of sportsmanship and teamwork.
The event, held at the China Communications Construction Company Basketball Court in Entebbe, saw the UCAA’s own basketball team clinch victory against Riders Legacy in a competitive final. The tournament featured diverse teams from local institutions, including St. Mary’s Seminary Ggaba, African Renewal University, Archers Legacy, and the Surveyors Institute of Entebbe.
Strengthening Community Bonds Through Sport
The basketball tournament was a key activity marking the annual International Aviation Week, celebrated globally during the first week of December. This week commemorates the signing of the historic 1944 Chicago Convention, which established the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Vianney Luggya, Manager of Public Affairs at UCAA, highlighted the event’s role in fostering connections. “It brings our stakeholders together on the basketball court, united by teamwork and friendly competition,” he said. He noted that the tournament provided a valuable informal setting for the aviation community to strengthen bonds with the wider public.
Mr. Luggya also connected the event to the broader role of aviation in supporting sports. “Sports plays an important role in connecting communities, and many sports teams frequently use Entebbe International Airport as they compete locally, regionally, and internationally,” he added.
A Week of Celebrations and Giving Back
The basketball tournament is part of a series of sporting initiatives organized by UCAA during Aviation Week to engage with the community. Other events include:
· The Seniors Golf Tournament, scheduled for December 6–7, 2025.
· The recently concluded Rwabushenyi Memorial Chess Championship.
· A netball tournament set for December 6, 2025, at the Fresh Handling playground in Entebbe.
UCAA also continues its long-standing participation in the corporate football league. These activities underscore the authority’s commitment to community engagement and celebrating the vital role of aviation in Uganda’s social and economic life, aligning with recent developments such as the national airline’s expansion and the push for sustainable aviation fuel.
